The purpose of my work is to capture the nature’s beauty, and to get the spectator feel the emotion I have felt while painting. The materials that I use in my paintings are cotton canvas and the oil colors. My landscapes are realistic with some impressionistic touches. I’m inspired by the natural landscapes, mainly of Spain, I look for the harmony between light and color, taking great care of the depth and the atmosphere of the environment.

This work was painted in the spring of the year 2017, Alcoleja is a beautiful village in the mountains of Alicante near the mountain range of Aitana, in addition to the almond trees, the farmers of the area, are also engaged in the production of olive oil. I made this canvas from a small meadow at the entrance of the village, I was located there to catch the spectacularity of the almond trees in full bloom. (Translated by Stevie Tseng and Chris Lee)

I started to paint this work in February of 2016, when the almond trees bloom in Alicante, because I paint from the nature, and not in the studio, I remember that that year it rained a lot and I had to leave the painting unfinished, until early March 2017 when returned to the same place to finish it. This painting belongs to a series of works that I made in the province of Alicante (Spain), specifically this is made in the village of Benilloba, near Cocentaina, it is a beautiful area of the Alicante mountains. In this painting I have described the depth of the mountains of the area, highlighting the importance of almond blossoms and the energy that bring us the spring. (Translated by Stevie Tseng and Chris Lee)

The Cabuérniga Valley is located in the North of Spain, quite close to Santander in the province of Cantabria, the valley is bathed by the Saja River and also the Ebro River, it is an area with beautiful vegetation. I painted this canvas in the spring of 2017, we can see some red flowers that are born at the sides of the path. I have also given importance to the path itself, that invite us, after the rain, to take a walk through this beautiful forest. (Translated by Stevie Tseng and Chris Lee)

Fuente Dé, is located in the North of Spain, in the region of Liébana province of Cantabria, in this area there is a glacial cirque ,where the Deva Riveris born and waters the region, the subject of the painting is a sunrise, from a clearing in a beech and oaks forest. I remember that morning there was a great peace that surrounded the landscape, and that I wanted to transmit in my work. (Translated by Stevie Tseng and Chris Lee)

A snowy landscape always inspires me peace and tranquility, that occurs after the snow, I waited for the sun to rise to capture the brightness of the leaves in autumn and the shade of the trees. Behind the fence there is a beautiful meadow, it is a charming and peaceful area that is at the entrance to the beautiful Picos de Europa. (Translated by Stevie Tseng and Chris Lee)

I painted this canvas of lilac flowers and poppies in the spring, in a beautiful countryside area in the province of Madrid. The painting has a richness of color and a lot of texture in the foreground, on the background, the trees and the gray mountains, wrap the landscape and give it that special atmosphere, typical of the fields of the Community of Madrid. (Translated by Stevie Tseng and Chris Lee)

In the month of May Spain is full of flower fields, this landscape is of a sunrise in a flowery field of poppies, a beautiful place of Castile where the flowers and the mountains of the background combine, and the path, quite common in my works, that invites us to take a walk enjoying the beauty of these incredible landscapes.
I finished the work at the end of May 2016 and it is made in oil on canvas. (Translated by Stevie Tseng and Chris Lee)

I painted this work in the area named the Valle del Oso, on the Quirós River, province of Asturias, in the North of Spain. This beautiful place is accessed by the path of the bear, formerly it was a mining area, and now is dedicated to those who like to hike, while enjoying the beauty of the environment. I painted this work, in a very clear and luminous day, I gave importance to the transparency of the waters of this majestic reservoir, adorned with the detail of the trunks in the water, and the reflection of the trees in the background, the small house that appears in the painting is a winter shelter for the shepherds. (Translated by Stevie Tseng and Chris Lee)

11468_Joan Coloma_20181146806_弗雷斯內多的山城 Fresnedo_油畫 oil on canvas_81x65cm_sm_2017.jpg

↑上圖:11468_Joan Coloma_20181146806_弗雷斯內多的山城 Fresnedo_油畫 oil on canvas_81x65cm_25F_sm_2017

Fresnedo is a beautiful village in the Asturian region of Teverga, located south of Oviedo. This is an area where I used to go to paint a lot, since there are some unique views from Fresnedo, the big rock that can be seen in the background is Estrechura Gorge, it is a spectacular gorge where you can visit Cueva Huerta , a natural cave over 14km , it's one of the longest in Spain. In this work I have made a composition where we can see, on the left the village of Fresnedo, combined with the spectacle of Estrechura Gorge, wrapped with the vegetation of the area, to give the whole set a bucolic atmosphere.  (Translated by Stevie Tseng and Chris Lee)

11468_Joan Coloma_20181146812_阿爾格巴尼斯的山谷 Valle de Arguebanes_油畫 oil on canvas_81x65cm_sm_2016.jpg

↑上圖:11468_Joan Coloma_20181146812_阿爾格巴尼斯的山谷 Valle de Arguebanes_油畫 oil on canvas_81x65cm_25F_sm_2016

The Argüébanes Valley has a special meaning for me because when I arrived in the Picos de Europa, more than thirty years ago, I was struck by this landscape that is part of another Valley, the Camaleño Valley, there is the heart of Liébana and the Picos de Europa, a place of inspiration for me.

The houses in the back are farms that are dedicated to agriculture, there are many apple trees and cherry trees, these houses are the first ones that are seen before arriving at the village of Argüébanes, they also dedicate themselves to the cattle raising and the raising of dairy cows to elaborate some cheeses with denomination of origin "quesucos de Liébana" that are exquisite.

This landscape is made taking care of the atmosphere that surrounds the Picos de Europa, below the snow disappears and you can see the green meadows, all the work is done in several sessions, letting the first layers dry and then be able to give light to the mountains and the glazes to see that beautiful mist typical of the Picos de Europa, the trees and the close-ups are also made by drying several layers so that some areas have quite a texture that gives an attractive view.

↑上圖:11468_Joan Coloma_20181146811_巴爾德普拉多之春 Primavera en Valdeprado_油畫 oil on canvas_100x40cm_20_sm_2017

Valdeprado is the small village that appears in the painting, and it is located on the rise to the Puerto de Piedrasluengas, it is a very picturesque area of the Valle de Liébana in Cantabria. In the painting you can see the mountains in the background that give depth to the landscape, and the close-ups fruit trees in bloom, that give life, the vegetation in the background acquires a beauty tone between green and gold in the afternoon light, and the village of Valdeprado where its inhabitants are dedicated to livestock and agriculture. The work was completed in early June in 2017. (Translated by Stevie Tseng and Chris Lee)

One of the most spectacular views of the Picos de Europa is in Liébana (Cantabria), from there you breathe peace, I go a lot to paint in this area in the North of Spain, fleeing from the madding crowd that the city produces. I did this work in the spring, I chose a panoramic format to highlight the spectacular nature of the Picos de Europa, the best time to paint the Picos de Europa is from noon when the sun's rays hit the side, so you can appreciate the beauty and highlight how the great rocks of the Picos de Europa stand out. The clarity of the day provokes a feeling of relative closeness, the path we see leads to a forest of oaks and beech trees and below the village of Potes, which is a very popular place in summer. I have looked for the balance between the mountain with its snowy peaks and the greenery of the spring that is beginning.

Joan Coloma
Interview: Joan Coloma: The landscaper of the peaks of Europe

He was born in Alcoi (Alicante) in 1956. In 1970 he began his studies at the School of Fine Arts and School of Applied Arts and Crafts, specializing in graphic design. Towards the year 1977, he began to go out to paint in the countryside, dedicating himself to painting in a more self-taught way, although the school did not leave it until 1981, using it as a basis for the technique he had learned.

Q: Why are the figures not seen in your landscapes?

A: I am interested in giving maximum importance to the landscape and I understand that the figure takes away prominence, however occasionally I consider the need to include a shepherd or a flock of sheep but in the background when those figures are part of the natural beauty of the landscape.

Q: Do your paintings speak of the beauty of silence and solitude in the face of the threat of noise? A photographer looks for those landscapes that inspire him, that coincide with his aesthetic, in which he finds himself and can communicate from his privacy. Find the place and the most propitious moment.

A: The naturalness of my painting has nothing to do with the stressful noise of cities, the aim of my painting is to convey to the viewer the beauty of solitude, the beauty of silence, also the beauty of noise, there is no water produced of a river, so when the person who is watching my work tells me that he is hearing the meandering water in the river or the silence of the mountain gratifies me and I think it has been worth walking four hours to find that beautiful landscape, put it on the canvas and get to convey the emotion I felt when doing the work.

Q: What parallelism is there between the painter and the photographer?

A: I think the parallelism is total, if we talk about artistic photography, we both look for a way to capture what we see and the emotions we feel; When we do our work, a painting like an artistic photograph has to convey emotion, joy, the beauty of loneliness, also anger or melancholy. The important thing is that the viewer feels something when he is watching the work.

Q: Does it dispense with all those components that only bring confusion to the canvas and keep it away from the harmony it seeks?

A: Of course yes, my painting is bucolic and natural, that's why I do not use the roads, the light poles and many components that make the landscape unsightly and unnatural; I want to clarify that I am talking about my painting. I have seen magnificent paintings with asphalt roads or with twenty-story buildings, everything depends on what the artist wants to convey and the important thing is that he gets it.

Q: Is painting an immobile and silent surface?

A: No, the painting has soul feeling, the painting speaks, you hear it, you see how the water collides against a stone, how the leaves fall in autumn, the picture has to make you vibrate and I think that is the farthest thing from immobility and silence.

Q: When it comes to painting nature, consider questions such as these: What can I highlight? What can I say? What do I have to predominate (color, light, geometry, fog, dew, wind, etc ...)

A: Everything is always taken into account when painting nature, but in my landscapes I especially consider naturalness and light. As a Mediterranean painter that I am, for me it is very important that there is a lot of light and I look for light to embellish the landscape, even a backlight can be beautiful, so to make my paintings I always look for the sun, something a bit difficult especially in the north, but it is worth waiting for since the result is always very satisfactory.

Q: Do you power your painting with light? The way of composing in painting is often compared to that of photography.

A: As I have said before, my painting is based on light, but I try to apply the one that corresponds in each place, so that the landscape is the most natural by avoiding the exaggerations and trying not to force the colors, there is not the same light in the Picos de Europa that in Asturias or in the Basque Country or in the Mediterranean. As for the relationship that exists in the composition of painting and artistic photography, I think it is total, what is important is that it achieves the goal that the photographer or the painter wanted to convey, summarizing a painting is art and photography as well. In fact, there was an artistic trend in the early twentieth century "pictorial photography" in which painting and photography merged.

Q: Is there any basic difference?

A: The differences between painting and photography is that to make a landscape I go to the field, I put my easel and I draw and apply the colors on the canvas and leave it ready to give the final touches when considering the time of day when the landscape acquires maximum beauty. All this can take hours, days or weeks and the photographer thinks he does the same as me, but with different materials.

Q: What do you think of the new technologies applied to painting?

A: Everything that is to advance seems fantastic to me, as long as the final result is what the artist wants and not the machine.

Q: Who is the most influential living artist?

A: There are several living artists very influential in the art: Miquel Barccló, Antonio López, Antoni Tapies and a long etc. But I have to say that in my painting I was greatly influenced by the great landscaper, Elías Garralda, whom I met while painting in the Picos de Europa. And as non-living painters and who have influenced my painting Carlos De Haes and Francisco Núñez Losada a lot.

Q: Where do you look for your landscapes?

A: I have been painting the Picos de Europa and Asturias for over twenty years; almost all my work is from this area and I can say that my landscapes are found in almost all of Spain, although mainly in the Madrid area. I also have some clients in Mexico, Venezuela, France, Germany, even in Australia.

Q: Which box are you most proud of? Is it found?

A: I do not know, I only say that my landscapes are made with all my love and are pieces of my life. I dedicate a great effort to try that my work is every day better, I hope to get it little by little.

Joan Coloma has dedicated the last twenty years of his life to painting the landscapes of Europe. His work is the result of two decades of a deep artistic relationship with the mountains, valleys and flora of the Canabria, Asturias and Leon regions of Spain. His style is simultaneously relaxed and vibrant, with seemingly effortless brushstrokes that deliver a bright and chromatic piece of work.

In particular, he favours the changing of the seasons, as it gives him the opportunity to interpret the rich tones of nature in all their glory. Coloma’s style and application of colour to traditional landscapes makes his work a refreshing addition to the collections of contemporary and traditional collectors alike.

"Born natural landscape artist" who does not "fall in concessions": "neither yields to any kind of facility", are some of the expressions that underline the contribution and the creative itinerary of Joan Coloma, that gets involved in the description of the customs trapping the grandiosity of the mountains, recreating in the snow. And in lower terms appear the rocks, the mountains covered by trees that from the distance acquire grayish tones, to end up exploding the range of greens in the valleys that become first term, with villages settled on sunny slopes, villages that transpire tranquility, in which time seems to have stopped. Pictures, which convey the feeling of freedom, also of loneliness, of silence.

Joan Coloma
Joan Coloma based his work on a careful and attentive drawing, which enriches with color, sometimes cheerful, with the sun's state. Its objective is to record the impressive and beautiful nature can be. And he gets it fully in these peaks and summits.

Joan Coloma
The high mountain painting of Joan Coloma
The artist who now exhibits his paintings in the Zuccaro art gallery is the Alcoyano painter Joan Coloma, a singular creator of realistic compositions linked to the nineteenth-century Spanish landscape of the best ancestry.

And since this current follower of the high mountain painting of that teacher who was Núñez Losada, is a complete and sensitive artist, owner of a powerful drawing, with wisdom in the treatment of light and mastery in the conjugation of the ranges tonal chromaticism achieves spectacular compositions with immense valleys, trees and meadows crowned by the whiteness of eternal snow.

But Coloma also goes deep, when the time comes to capture the joy of the enameled praderíos of spring flowers and the gold of the autumnal landscapes. In short, a warm Spanish singer of the divine beauty of nature created.
